BEHAVIORAL CHALLENGE: Get more people to reduce their energy consumption and choose fossil-free electricity contracts.
During the fall and winter of 2022, Strängnäs municipality wanted to make it easier for households in and around the municipality to have a smarter and more sustainable energy use. The goal was to help households switch to a fossil-free (or fully renewable) electricity contract, reduce the load on the electricity grid by reducing electricity consumption and doing electricity-heavy activities at night, and consider whether an hourly price agreement was suitable for the household.
SMART NUDGE: Platform for smart energy behaviors
We at Nudgd developed a digital platform with built-in nudges, tips and information to encourage smart and sustainable behaviors around electricity use and energy. As many as 10,000 households in Strängnäs received SMS messages that gave them direct access to the personalized platform.
Two rounds of SMS were sent out and the content of the platform was updated before each sending. Among other things, the households received Strängnäs' own best electricity saving tips, challenges, a simple guide on how to change electricity contracts and much more.
RESULTS: 40% changed to smarter energy behaviors
Of those who said they visited the platform, as many as 40% said it made them take one or more actions to make their electricity use more sustainable, and 27% said they plan to do so thanks to the service.
- 12% switched to a fossil-free electricity contract or plan to do so.
- 10% switched to an hourly rate contract or plan to do so.
- 56% do or plan to do at least one measure in their household to save energy
"Smart use of electricity is crucial to achieving our climate goals. The service reached the majority of households in the municipality in an efficient way and with good results. We are very satisfied and will explore more ways to use Nudgd's platform to promote sustainable behaviors."
