The course is aimed at professionals who work with, or wish to deepen their expertise in, mobility, urban development or sustainability, and who want to promote more sustainable travel habits in workplaces and cities. We build on nudging, a method grounded in behavioral science and design, where carefully considered adjustments in how choices are presented make it easier for people to choose sustainable options in their everyday lives.

We are excited to launch the course Nudging for Sustainable Mobility, developed by Nudgd in collaboration with the EIT Urban Mobility Competence Hub. Together, we aim to build capacity across Europe and accelerate the transition to sustainable urban transport systems.

Throughout the course, you will explore how nudging and behavioral insights can make sustainable choices the easy, logical and rewarding option for people, organizations and the planet.

The course is supported by EIT Urban Mobility, an initiative of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), a body of the European Union that works to accelerate positive change in mobility and make urban environments more liveable and enjoyable.

Voices from previous courses

“A very interesting course covering many areas of sustainable travel. A tasteful mix of theory and examples of behavior-influencing activities from across Sweden. The course leader was knowledgeable and pedagogical. We are very satisfied with the course!”
— Region of Västerbotten, Sweden

“Nudgd highlights the benefits of shifting travel behavior towards
sustainable mobility in a fun and clear way. We especially appreciated the tips shared during the webinar, those kinds of tips make it easy to ‘copy and paste,’ which we definitely plan to do to accelerate our path towards sustainable mobility.”

— Mälardalen Energy Agency, City of Eskilstuna, Sweden

Why sustainable mobility needs a behavioral approach?

The challenge 🚗💨
Even with better infrastructure and smarter policies, people often stick to old travel habits. Because behavior isn’t just about logic, it’s about routines, emotions, and tiny daily decisions.

The missing piece 🧩
Mobility planning usually focuses on systems, not humans. Without understanding why people choose the car over the bike, even the best strategies risk to fall short.

The solution 💡
That’s where nudging comes in, smart and timely interventions that make the sustainable choice the easy one. When you combine behavioral insights with design and planning, you get real, measurable change.

Who is this course for?

Whether you’re shaping city policy or developing local sustainable mobility campaigns, this course provides the practical tools needed to make meaningful change.
This course is ideal for:

  • Policy makers and Sustainability Professionals working with transport behavior
  • Sustainability Managers
  • City Planners
  • Mobility Managers
  • Urban Designers

What you’ll learn

You’ll explore the foundations of behavioral science and learn how to apply nudging techniques to encourage active travel, boost shared mobility, and reduce car dependency.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Translate behavioral theory into tangible interventions
  • Identify barriers to sustainable and accessible mobility
  • Design and implement behavior-based mobility strategies
  • Apply nudging principles in planning and policy
  • Understand travel behavior through a human-centred lens

Whether you’re designing a bike lane, planning a commuter campaign, or rethinking public transport incentives, this course helps you make it stick.

What is nudging?

Nudging is a cost efficient, impact-driven approach to changing mobility behavior without restricting choice. In the context of urban mobility, it’s a smart way to encourage better decisions, like choosing to bike over taking the car, or trying a shared mobility service.

By the end of the course, you’ll know how to apply these methods to improve sustainable mobility.
